Turku City Theatre

Turku City Theatre was founded in 1946 and it is the oldest Municipal theatre in Finland, owned and administrated by the City of Turku. The theatre has always been a traditional repertory theatre staging several plays on all its platforms simultaneously.

The theatre operated in several different performance spaces like the Turku Concert Hall and the Turku Swedish Theatre until the new theatre house was built on the shore of the river Aura in 1962. The building is designed by Risto-Veikko Luukkonen and Helmer Stenroos.

The theatre has three performance spaces. The Main Stage seats 654 spectators, the small stage Sopukka (“The Nook”) is adjustable to 80-140 spectators and the smallest studio stage Pikkolo accommodates up to 60 spectators. The first floor foyer can also ne used as a performance space; it seats up to 150 spectators. The cafeteria of the theatre has been run by Kanresta Ltd. since 2009.

Turku City Theatre produces 8-10 premieres yearly; there are 10-20 visiting performances and about 400 performances altogether. The theatre has a yearly audience of about 70 000 spectators.

The theatre has a permanent staff of about 120 people. Since 2008 Turku City Theatre has been managed by Raija-Liisa Seilo.
