Exhibition at Turku Castle from 5 February to 27 September 2015

Turku Castle’s new exhibition explores the life of Queen Kristina

Turku Castle’s new exhibition The Girl King – Made in Turku focuses on Queen Kristina, who ruled the kingdom of Sweden during the early 17th century. It is also closely linked to Mika Kaurismäki's film The Girl King, which was shot in the castle.

Turku Castle

Turku Castle is a more than 700 year old historical monument. It has stood guard over the river Aura estuary since the 1280’s. Its granite stone walls hold within them the history of Finland, Sweden and the other Nordic countries.

The Castle has seen eras of both grandeur and of decline. It has served as a fortification, an administrative centre and a stately palace. The Castle housed a prison, served as a storehouse and as barracks. A little over a hundred years ago a museum was founded in the Castle, and it has been one of the most popular tourist destination in Finland ever since.

Turku Castle has been built, extended and modified many times during the course of centuries. Nowadays the periods of construction can be seen in labyrinthine passages, walled up doors and windows and in mysterious staircases.

Step inside and let yourself be absorbed by the fascinating history of Turku Castle! Join a guided tour or see the Castle in your own pace. Why not download an audio-guided tour on your own MP3 player or smartphone. The Museum Shop Fatabur offers a wide variety of high-quality products, many of which are hand-made locally.
