An Ecumenical Christmas in Turku for 20 years

The humanitarian message was presented by Sauli Niinistö, President of Finland, and Soprano Tarja Turunen performed as guest soloist. The event was televised. The programme airs on TV1 on Christmas Eve.

Christmas Peace and Ecumenism

The first time Christmas Peace was declared from Turku's Old Great Square is thought to have taken place as early as in the 1320's.  Since then, the tradition has continued uninterrupted, with only a few exceptions.  The church had a major role in maintaining societal order, and in the early days of the declaration, it was used for this purpose.

The ecumenical appeal for peace and the humanitarian message complement the Finnish tradition of declaring Christmas peace.  The tradition of holding the ecumenical Christmas in Turku, Finland event in the Turku Cathedral started in 1994. Since 1998, the ceremony has also included a humanitarian message.
