Hansatown

The commercial city centre surrounding the Market Square is one of the key targets of measures aimed at developing the city centre. The year-round attractiveness and commercial vividness of the city centre are strengthened through several measures together with entrepreneurs and other operators in the city centre.

The renewing Market Square will become a multi-purpose meeting place and a vivid hub of events with plantings and permanent structures to increase comfortability. The urban space being built in the Market Square area provides an opportunity both for spending time pleasantly and living an active urban life, taking needs of various user groups into consideration. Expanding walking-oriented spaces increases comfortability and vividness in the city centre. As cars are directed into parking halls, there will be more space to build the city for people.

Transport and mobility solutions have a significant role from the point of view of comfortability, accessibility and effortlessness of mobility in the city centre. The city has begun to investigate alternative models of transport, measuring different alternatives against the City of Turku objectives of carbon neutrality and modes of transport distribution, among others.
