Park Maintenance

Parks and other green areas are maintained according to the national park maintenance classifications. The maintenance classification of a park is determined by the area’s location and purpose of use. Parks in the City Centre are maintained more intensively.

Turku City parks are characterized by diversity. Diverse natural conditions of the parks ensure functional green corridors and ecological connectivity. This is why a park can often have areas with different maintenance levels. For example, one part of a park may be classified as a landscape meadow and another as a park forest.

Key features of maintenance classifications

A1 Representative green areas

Representative green areas are located in the urban structure in the immediate vicinity of important public buildings. The goal of the maintenance is to preserve the individual architectural and historical image of the place. Parks of this type in Turku are the parks around the Old Great Square as well as Asemanpuisto (the Railway Station Park).

A2 Recreational green areas

Recreational green areas are located in central constructed areas. The goal of the maintenance is to have diverse, safe, and functional green areas.

A3 Recreation and protective green areas

Recreation and protective green areas are located in residential areas and close to traffic. The goal of the maintenance is to keep a parklike overall appearance and to ensure the space is conducive to outdoor recreation.

B1 Landscape fields

Landscape fields are fields that are used for farming. Also landscape plants, such as sunflowers, are cultivated on landscape fields.

B2 Landscape meadows

Landscape meadows include meadows and pastures generated by agriculture, fields no longer used actively for farming, newly established meadows, and natural meadows. Meadows help maintain the openness of landscape and biodiversity.

Meadows are open and bright habitats with characteristic flora and fauna. Meadows offer the residents in population centres nature experiences and possibilities to enjoy traditional landscapes.

C1 Forests near residential areas

Forests near residential areas have small surface areas.

The goal of the maintenance is to preserve the landscape and the versatile and robust vegetation.

C2 Recreational forests

Recreational forests are large forest areas located between residential areas. The goal of the maintenance is to preserve the forest landscape, original nature, flora, and fauna, as well as to ensure the space is conducive to outdoor recreation.

C3 Protective forest zones

Protective forest zones are located by the edges of major roads, industrial areas, and waterways. The goal of the maintenance is to preserve the multi-level and robust vegetation.

C4 Forests

C4 forests are wide forest areas on the peripheries of population centres. The goal of the maintenance is to preserve the characteristics of the areas.
