A new kind of museum in Turku

A whole new museum will be built in Turku! 

The new Museum of History and the Future will create experiences and be a source of inspiration and a domestic and international cultural destination. The museum will become a meeting place for the people of Turku. 

In the Museum of History and the Future, the stories of Finland's oldest city and its people will come to life and increase our understanding of the past and the present. The museum will combine new ways of storytelling with experimental presentation methods used in science centres, and it will present the contents of history with a touch of new technology.

Experiences – perspectives – interaction – community

The museum space will be open and accessible, and it will breathe in sync with the city's culture. 

Local is always most interesting. The best way to reach the full range of visitors, from locals to tourists, is to tell them something essential about what Turku is about and what it means to be from Turku and from Finland – by being truly local!

When will the museum open?

The new museum building will open in 2029, when Turku celebrates its 800th anniversary. The exhibitions will open in 2030.
We are currently planning the concept, project plan and town planning proposal for the museum. An international architecture competition will take place in 2023.
