Turku has been the first in many things. Now, it is time to be the first to build a new legend: a world-class campus and science park. All those inspired by this idea will be able to share their thoughts during the idea week that will be held in the turn of November and December.

How will the area between Yliopistonmäki, Kupittaa and Itäharju look in the 2030s? What services and companies should there be in the area, and what is campus of the future like? How will the area be developed into a more dynamic and attractive one, and what kind of buildings should be built there? And how should traffic and mobility in the area be arranged in the future?

Answers to these and many other questions will be sought during the Turku Future Forum idea week held between 28 November and 1 December 2016. The city invites all those interested in developing the Turku campus and science park to participate. During the week, from Monday to Thursday, everyone has the opportunity to share their ideas about the future of Turku – and the whole Finland.

Where are the keys to success?

In the workshop on Monday, the participants will design an attractive urban environment from the perspective of high-rise construction and zoning, for example. The theme on Tuesday is smart traffic.

On Wednesday, we will focus on the part of smart solutions and operators in the development of the Campus and the Science Park. The week will end with a higher education theme day. The participants will come up with ideas that will help Turku keep its place as the number one city of higher education.

“We are now bravely creating a new kind of innovation environment for education, science and business life. The City wants to inspire all stakeholders to participate in envisioning the future. Improving the area’s attractiveness and competitiveness will, in the long run, benefit everyone,” says Project Manager Riitta Birkstedt from the City of Turku’s City Development Group.

The Campus and the Science Park are one of the City of Turku’s strategic spearhead projects. The area will become a centre of growth and success and it will bring together innovation, education and training, science, services, businesses, recreation and sports and combine them with modern construction and smart traffic.

“We are truly attempting to find out the thoughts of different operators on what kind of solutions will help reach success in the future. The week’s results will be utilised in planning the Campus and Science Park project and in branding the area and the City of Turku,” says Birkstedt.
