The already 50-year long friendship between Turku and Cologne was celebrated in Cologne last spring. The Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker and her delegation visited Turku from 31 August to 2 September.

During the visit, the officials of both cities learned new viewpoints and means of urban development from one another. The metropolitan city of Cologne is interested in the know-how found in Turku, and during a few days, the guests had a look at the new vision for the centre of Turku, business know-how and the education sector in Finland and Turku.

– As traditional but modern cities, Turku and Cologne want to develop cooperation on many fields and we have plenty of potential yet to be harnessed, says Mayor of the City of Turku Aleksi Randell.

The visit was hosted by Mayor of the City of Turku Aleksi Randell, the Chairperson of the City Council Elina Rantanen and the Chairperson of the City Board Lauri Kattelus.

The Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker gave the Mayor of Turku Aleksi Randell a piece of the original glass from the Dome of Cologne.

Films and lectures included in the programme for public

To celebrate friendship between Turku and Cologne, two films were shown at the Main Library Studio on Friday 1 September at 18:15 p.m.:  Menschen am Sonntag – People on Sunday 2010 and Kölner Bewegungen.

In addition, the City of Turku Main Library and the Finnish-German Association in Turku organised a lecture by Marjaliisa Hentilä at the Main Library Studio on Thursday 31 August, on the theme The German Finland 1918 – How did Germany help save Finland?
