A condition estimation regarding the building life cycle of Lauste school was done in autumn 2018. Further inspections were carried out on the basis of the condition estimation and the final report was ready on 16 January 2019.

Based on the report there is microbial growth in the floor and in the outer wall of the Lauste school gym. The microbial growth exceeds the allowed limits and is a sign of a microbe damage. There is an air connection from the damaged structures to indoor air. Measures to be taken will be clarified and carried out to restrict the damage.

A public occasion and discussions are arranged at Lauste school on Monday evening 28 January.

According to the current information and inspections, the schoolwork can be continued, apart from the gym, in the other parts of the building during spring 2019. The City of Turku will next have further inspections done in the whole school building. They will be carried out by an outside expert on building health, RTA

- Schoolwork and other activities can continue in the facilities but additional inspections will now be done to check the situation, says Olli Sjövall, Environmental Health Manager of the City of Turku.

The personnel working in the Lauste school building has already been informed on the closing of the gym. Kati Järvi, Indoor Air Quality Manager of the City of Turku, visited the school on Tuesday 22 January and told the personnel about the inspection results and the closing of the gym.

In addition to the schoolwork, Lauste school facilities have a preschool, a library and a youth space. In Lauste school there are 180 pupils, 50 preschool pupils and 16 teachers. The library has one employee and the youth space 2 employees.

The gym is used by several clubs of Turku and also by the sports services of the City of Turku, for example, classes of Sports Wonderlands for Kids and the ‘Mihi’ classes of 13–19-year-olds.

The users of the gym have been informed on the closing of the gym and alternative classes are searched for in other schools of the city, for example, in Ypsilon Community Centre which was just opened in Yli-Maaria.

- Dates and times are not, of course, the same and there may be free sports classes only on the other side of the city, but at least on weekends there are still free classes for users, says Oskari Nummi, Sports Facility Manager of the City of Turku.

The gym of Lauste school has not been renovated since its completion in 1976 but repairs have been done in the whole building during the years.

The City of Turku is preparing to move the school operations of Lauste to temporary facilities in autumn 2019 because Lauste school must anyway be renovated or it must be replaced by a new school building. A report on the need for a new school and alternatives will be completed by summer 2019. The temporary facilities are now planned to be at the side of the sports ground of Lauste.

The matter will be discussed in the Education Committee on 23 January 2019.

An information meeting on the closing of the gym of Lauste school and on the additional inspections to be done in the school will be arranged for parents on Monday 28 January at 6 p.m. in the lunch room of Lauste school.
