Scandic Julia, a hotel in the very heart of Turku, overlooking the Aura River next to the beautiful Vähätori Square, is the first Scandic hotel in Finland to be awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label. Sustainable Travel Finland is a programme developed by Visit Finland in which companies fulfil the demanding sustainable development criteria set by the national umbrella organisation for tourism in Finland.

The STF label is an indicator of the economic, ecological, social and cultural sustainability of travel destinations and tourism companies.

“We are delighted to have our long-term corporate responsibility efforts be presented alongside other companies in the Turku region that have been awarded the label,” says General Manager Mikko Henriksson.

“Together, we can attract international tourists with our responsible work, that follows the principles of sustainable development, when tourists are once again allowed to travel more freely.”

Responsibility in the heart of Scandic’s activities

“Scandic Julia has had the Nordic Swan Ecolabel since 2015,” says Henriksson. Responsibility and green values have been an important part of Scandic hotels’ activities since the 1990s. Scandic Julia was the first hotel in Turku that started using a green district cooling solution when the hotel was renovated in 2011.

“At Scandic Julia, responsibility is an integral part of our daily routine, including waste sorting and reducing the amount of food going to waste with the ResQ service,” says Henriksson. “In addition, our team members help deprived people with the help of the Hope charity through the Scandic in Society programme. In the Joulupuu charity campaign, we give children in the area gifts and we have donated equipment no longer in use to a family rehabilitation centre. We also provide a significant number of students in the hotel and catering industry with internships. The idea for our latest corporate responsibility project related to water conservation efforts on the behalf of our guests and team members was created in a Scandic corporate responsibility workshop.”
