Turku City Strategy: Turku in the 2030s (pdf)

Turku City Council adopted Turku's new strategy on 14 February 2022.

You can read more about it at www.turku.fi/en/strategy.

The new strategy of the City of Turku will guide Turku into the next decade and the atmosphere after the city's 800th anniversary. The outlook is an international city of culture that has achieved its goal of carbon neutrality and a reputation as a leading city of climate and nature.

“I believe that in the 2030s Turku will be progressing steadily towards a balance with the carrying capacity of the environment. We have also achieved all the objectives of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the city level,” says Minna Arve, Mayor of Turku.

According to the strategy, ecological values will permeate the City's operations and guide planning, construction and mobility solutions. Residents, companies and communities in the region are greatly involved in the creation of climate solutions. Circular economy will create prosperity and new jobs, strengthening the region's economy.

In addition to responsibility, the values of Turku include equality, resident and customer orientation as well as renewal and cooperation.

Turku's success is based on cooperation.

“Turku's success is based on cooperation. For example, through cooperation between the City, the higher education institutions and companies, we enhance business activities and employment that are important for the region. As a result, the numerous students in the city can find work here and stay in the Turku region. We invest in education and improving competences at all stages of life,” Arve says.

Our strategy sets the goal for Turku and the Turku region to grow at least at the same pace as other large urban regions. Turku also attracts a large number of international experts. The International House Turku established in the city offers them one-stop integration and settling services, both physically and digitally.

Active and vibrant city

Other city services are also available digitally, easily and in a timely manner. Additionally, services can be tailored according to people's different needs and life situations.

We invest in preventive work that supports well-being.

“We invest in preventive work that supports well-being and ensures that all the important services are equally available to everyone regardless of their residential area,” Arve says.

Well-being is built on a long-term basis from a young age.

“We want Turku schoolchildren to be the happiest schoolchildren in the world. We support them not only at school but also in hobbies and address potential risk factors in time.”

The activeness of Turku residents is supported by modern sports and exercise centres. They encourage people of all ages to exercise and participate in sports events as an audience.

In the 2030s, Turku will also have many new and important culture and event facilities, which you can feel proud of. The Museum of History and the Future, the Experience Centre, the House of Art, the Turku Music Centre and the entire Cultural Riverside make the city more vibrant and attract tourists. The appeal Turku is comparable to the appeal of Nordic capital cities.
