“People's desire to help is touching”

A campaign arranged by the City of Turku between December 7–10 to help residents of the city of Kharkiv brought in large amounts of electric and heating equipment. A lorry load of 29 EUR-pallets of goods, with a volume of 76 m3 and weighing about 8 tons was shipped to the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. A total of 122 donors participated.

The City of Turku is helping the City of Kharkiv and its residents by organising a collection for electricity and heating equipment in December. The collection will be held from 7 December to 10 December 2022 at a collection point arranged by the City of Turku. Companies, communities and residents in the Turku region are specifically requested to donate large and fully functional equipment for electricity production and heating.

The aim of Empower Wednesdays is to support international talents in the Turku area in their integration process and provide key information to help find their path to working life. 2021 Spring program will start on the 24th of February and run until the end of May.

One international dimension in Turku's climate work is the EU Mission ‘100 Climate-neutral and Smart Cities’, for which Turku was selected in 2022. Turku has now received recognition from the European Commission for the City’s pioneering role in the realisation of its Climate City Contract related to the mission.

Mayor of Turku, Minna Arve, will participate in the mayors’ “Translating the EU Green Deal into Local Action” conference in Brussels on March 15th. The conference aims to influence the EU's strategic agenda by emphasizing the significant role of cities in climate action. Additionally, Mayor Arve will participate in a dialogue with city and business representatives convened by the Vice-President of the Commission and meet several key Commission officials during the trip.

Saturday 24 February 2024 marks two years since Russia launched a brutal war of aggression against Ukraine. To show support for Ukraine, the exhibition “Urhea Ukraina” (brave Ukraine) will open at Art House Turku on the eve of the anniversary. In April, the reading drama "Bunker Kiev" will be performed at Art House Turku. The City of Turku has supported Ukraine since the beginning of the war, both financially and with donations of goods and materials.

The City of Turku welcomes ice skaters to the natural ice, Parkki field and Kupittaa skating rink. The Nunnavuori ski tracks are also open to skiers.

Turku is serving as one of the event’s host ports in the upcoming summer, when the big sailing ships come to Aura River between 18.-21.7.2024. Other host ports for the competition include Åland’s Mariehamn, Lithuania’s Klaipeda, Poland’s Szczecin, Finland’s Helsinki, and Estonia’s Tallinn. The ships will arrive to Turku from Tallinn. The tall ships’ race takes place in the Baltic Sea every four years.
