The grand dance performance Joki – Ån, The first winter

The grand dance performance “Joki – Ån” tells the story of two girls from Turku, Johanna and Kirsti. The two become friends even though they come from different sides of the river and represent different classes of society.

In the performance, the stages of life of the two girls, the changing of seasons and the changes in folk music and dance from the 19th century to the present day are intertwined. At the same time, the performance demonstrates the diversity of folk dance groups in the area of Varsinais-Suomi and dancers of all ages take part in the show. Moreover, the design of costumes is a tribute to the Finnish national costume and the music portrays the history of different music styles marking the life of people living in Turku from engleskas to schlager.

The first winter

The first scene depicts the girls as children. They play together even though they live on different sides of the river and belong to different classes of society. It is winter, and the river is freezing…
