Sigyn is a unique ship even by international standards. No other wooden commercial vessel of the same age, which has sailed in ocean transport like Sigyn, has been preserved anywhere else in the world.

During the light event in Turku, Sigyn sails as a stage for an imaginative work combining video and light art. The art work has been inspired by the spectacular mast and rigging of the vessel, as well as ocean currents, marine life and the constantly changing underwater world on the seabed. The work’s visual appearance is shaped by the real-time underwater soundscape of the River Aura.

Sigyn is a site-specific piece designed for the Path of Light in Turku by Niko Tiainen and Antti Kulmala.

Sigyn – the first museum ship in Finland

The merchant barque Sigyn opened its doors to the public in 1939. Sigyn has been renovated several times over the years. Did you know that wood obtained from a Christmas tree outside Turku Cathedral has been used as its building material?
