The maritime centre is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00. On Independence Day, 6 December at 14:00 and 16:00, there will be guided tours (in Finnish) in the main exhibition, related to the history of Finland’s independence, at the price of an entrance ticket.

As its name suggests, the piece of light art called Under the Surface, and the soundscape associated with it, take you to experience life from a surprising perspective. This work of light art changes on a weekly basis and shows how different seasons look under the surface. Will you experience an autumnal storm or the gently lapping waves of the summer?

The work is part of the Light Orienteering, which includes 6 control points along the River Aura. The starting point for the orienteering is on the eastern shore of the river, opposite Turku City Hall. You can also experience the Under the Surface piece of light art without the orienteering, but it will light up to its true glory when you have completed the track of over 2 km.

The Light Orienteering and artwork are created jointly by Know Your Hoods and Jokojo. You can take part in the orienteering in Finnish, Swedish or English. Visit the Know Your Hoods website for more detailed instructions on how to participate in the Light Orienteering.

In the autumn of 2020, the City of Turku organised an open Ignite Turku idea competition, seeking for ideas to liven up the city centre and bring joy to the lives of Turku residents. Light Orienteering is one of the ideas selected for implementation through the competition.
