The Mental Health and Substance Abuse Unit serves patients who experience an acute mental health crisis, some other mentally straining situation, or a crisis situation related to substance abuse. Treatment can be sought through the Joint Emergency Services.

At the unit the need for psychiatric help is evaluated, first aid is given for difficult psychological symptoms, and the patient is guided to follow-up treatment if needed. A specialty doctor and a specialty nurse in psychiatry work at the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Unit.
