Quality control of household water
Turku City Environmental Health Care regularly monitors both the chemical and microbiological quality of household water. Household water is also tested based on complaints.
Also the laboratory of Turku Water Utility inspects raw water repositories, the various stages of the purification process, purified water and tap water.
Pests cause many kinds of damage to foodstuffs, goods and buildings. Additionally, they may cause health hazards to humans and domestic animals. Pests soil raw materials and goods with excrement, uric acid, webs, cocoons, larvae skins, dead specimens, and rodent hairs. Wood-destroying pests damage wooden structures and furniture. Rats and mice cause damage by eating and nibbling. Textile pests cause considerable material damage especially to natural fibers.
Health inspectors conduct a housing hygiene inspection if there is a justified reason to assume that the dwelling causes a health hazard to its inhabitants or neighbours. Requests for action should be submitted in written form by mail or email. In addition to the health inspector, the owner of the dwelling or his/her representative as well as the property manager will be present in the inspection.
Radon is an odorless, tasteless and invisible radioactive noble gas that a human cannot sense in any way. Radon can be detected only with special measuring equipment. High radon levels may cause lung cancer.
In addition to the purity of indoor air, other factors affecting housing health are:
- temperature
- humidity
- noise
- ventilation
- microbes
- light
- radiation
The responsibility for solving residential health problems belongs primarily to the owner of the dwelling or property. In terraced houses and blocks of flats the property manager is responsible for practical matters. The health inspector may inspect the dwelling on demand. Preliminary measurements related to dwelling inspections are free of charge.
