Swedish Language Immersion in Day Care

There are two Swedish language immersion groups in Kerttuli Day Care Unit: one for 5-year olds and one preschool education group. The used format is early and complete immersion.

In Kerttuli immersion begins in the year when the child becomes 5 years old. Children are taken into the group in queue order.  The children already have a good grasp of their mother tongue when they start the immersion, and the adopting of a new language is possible and learning is efficient. Everyone speaks Swedish to the child in the group, though the adults understand the child’s mother tongue. It is possible to continue the immersion from day care to the first school years.
