Old Great Square

The area of the Old Great Square makes up Turku’s historic centre and is surrounded by buildings of historic interest, such as the Brinkkala Mansion and the Old Town Hall.

Porthaninpuisto park, located between the square and Uudenmaankatu, is also part of the Old Great Square venue. Tuomiokirkontori square is located right next to the Old Great Square, on the other side of Uudenmaankatu.

The Old Great Square is used as a venue for various kinds of events: Christmas markets are held in the square during the Christmas season, and the square also hosts the traditional Declaration of Christmas Peace. In the middle of summer, the square and the adjacent Porthaninpuisto park are taken over by the Medieval Market. The square has also acted as the venue for various kinds of food events and a microbrewery festival.

Transport links and parking: The venue is located in Turku city centre.

Practical considerations:

• No ground attachments may be used on the lawn of the adjacent Porthaninpuisto park as this could damage the pipes of the automatic irrigation system.
• Event organisers must also take the square’s emergency access roads into consideration. There must be a clear, 4-metre wide way through the area that is not blocked by anything.
• Access to the properties (Brinkkala Mansion, Old Town Hall, the inner courtyard of Kirjakahvila) and to Nunnankatu must not be blocked during events.
• The nature of the event must be appropriate for the location.
• Sun–Thu until 10 p.m., Fri–Sat until midnight
• The activities inside the buildings and the inner courtyard of Brinkkala Mansion must be taken into consideration.
