What is Vimma?
Vimma is an art and activities house, that offers a variety of activities, actions and events for all ages. You can do crafts, listen to concerts, attend events or spend time at Kafé Vimma.
The activities are mainly aimed at 10–28-year-olds. But the cafe, for example, welcomes people of all ages. You can find more information about our activities on our website turku.fi/vimma.
You can find Vimma in the center of Turku on Aurakatu.
Premises
A street-level café and free internet terminals, as well as a mobile phone charging locker, are available to all. Vimma's premises are rented out as meeting rooms and for organizing various occasions and events.
Accessibility
Vimma is built to be an accessible place. People with reduced mobility can enter through two different ways: either from the street level by ringing the doorbell, or by the backyard ramp. Each floor of the house is accessible by a large elevator and all floors have a toilet for the disabled.
History of the building
Vimma was opened in 2006. The building itself was completed a hundred years earlier in 1906 for the Finnish Girls' School in Turku, which operated in the house until 1925. After the Finnish girls ‘school in Turku moved to larger premises in the new school building on Samppalinnanmäki, another, the state-owned Turku girls' school was moved to Aurakatu. That school was also known in Turku by the nickname Nunnala, The Nunnery. There were educational activities in the building until 1992, when the Aurakatu school was closed down.
The style of the building is a mixture of neo-Gothic and national romantic style with medieval nuances. The drawings by architect Sebastian Gripenberg were completed by another architect Johan Jacob Ahrenberg. The building has been protected by the Turku Museum Center and its restoration has preserved many beautiful architectural details, such as the massive oak door of the main entrance and the ornate colonnades in the entrance hall.
Vimma House of Arts and Activities for Young People is part of the youth services of the Turku's recreation services.
