Assistive Device Unit

Turku residents living at home or in a home-like service unit may borrow from the Assistive Device Lending Office devices needed for getting around, washing and going to the toilet. Other devices needed for performing daily functions at home may also be borrowed.

The need for an assistive device may be established by the person himself or herself, his/her next of kin, or a Social Services or Health Care worker.

When the need for an assistive device has been established, the client may call the Assistive Device Lending Unit  directly. 

If more information is needed in terms of the client's ability to function, or in terms of the need for an assistive device or its use, the therapist will conduct an evaluation. The evaluation includes the fitting and trying out of the assistive device. Time must be booked in advance for an evaluation visit.

When acquiring a personal assistive device, such as an active wheelchair, a referral from a Health Care Department physician, and/or an evaluation from a physical or occupational therapist at one's own health station is required. When necessary, the evaluation can be conducted at the client's home.

Distribution of assistive devices

• The loan period is agreed upon based on individual needs.
• There is no charge for borrowing assistive devices.
• The borrower is responsible for the transport of the assistive devices, and for making sure they have been cleaned before returning.

Maintenance and repairs of assistive devices

• The maintenance and repair of the assistive devices given out by the Turku Health Care Department is done at the Assistive Device Unit.
• When non-emergency maintenance and repairs are needed, please contact the Assistive Device Maintenance Unit to make an appointment.
