Pieces of the Myllysilta Bridge to fund scholarship for young artist

The Myllysilta Bridge in Turku disappeared during the summer but pieces of the bridge continue to support Finns. On Turku Day, pieces of the Myllysilta Bridge became available for purchase for the unit price of five euros. The revenues will be used to provide a scholarship for a young artist.

The Myllysilta Bridge fell downwards during early March. The fallen bridge became an instant city attraction and the talk of the nation. The bridge attracted attention from both Turku residents as well as visitors for the entire spring and summer.

Myllysilta Bridge recycled

All the material from the demolished bridge will be recycled and re-used. For example, the iron parts have been melted down to be re-used by the industry. Some of the stone elements will be used to benefit culture, while the rest will serve as the grounding for new construction.

After 2011, the scholarship funded by the Myllysilta Bridge revenues will be granted to a young artist who has given a unique and personal contribution to the Capital of Culture year.

Pieces of the Myllysilta Bridge are available for purchase at:

  • the 2011 Corner
  • Sokos Wiklund
  • the Kansallinen Kirjakauppa bookstore
  • the Wanha Turku store of the Turku Food Market
  • in the city museum shops
  • online shop

Share your memories about the Myllysilta Bridge on Facebookissa

In addition, memories and recollections about the Myllysilta Bridge will be gathered until the end of 2010. Stories, jokes and thoughts can be submitted through the Turku Capital of Culture group on Facebook.

The memories will be summarised as part of the Narrated and Experienced Turku project in the Capital of Culture year programme. The project, coordinated by the University of Turku School of History, Cultural and Art Studies, will examine urban memories, experiences and major events regarding Turku and its culture.
