The most interesting urban spaces are created through citizens’ initiatives

Based on the papers presented at the Finnish Urban Studies Days in Turku, the factors that play a central role in the creation of interesting urban spaces are the creating of a successful image and the public’s own initiatives.

According to a recent study by the Urban Research Programme, the City of Turku should make better use of its public spaces. Georgiana Varna’s research indicates that Turku’s market ​​places and open spaces are underutilised.

The rail network's masterplanning begins in January

In the first phase, the planning will determine where the rail network goes and where its stops will be located. Residents can participate in planning at every stage, for example commenting via the internet and at public meetings.
