Turku's climate work raised interest in the UN Climate Change Conference

Turku was the only city in Finland's delegation to the UN Climate Change Conference. In her speeches, Mayor Minna Arve particularly emphasised the importance of cities in the fight against climate change.

Turku and Florence update twin cities agreement

Turku and the Italian city of Florence have had a twin city relationship for 30 years. To mark the anniversary, Florence Mayor Dario Nardella was invited to bring a humanitarian message to the Ecumenical Christmas event taped in Turku on 15 December 2022. In connection with the visit, Mayor Nardella and Turku Mayor Minna Arve signed an update of the twin cities agreement between Turku and Florence.

Plenty of goods donated to Kharkiv aid effort

A campaign arranged by the City of Turku between December 7–10 to help residents of the city of Kharkiv brought in large amounts of electric and heating equipment. A lorry load of 29 EUR-pallets of goods, with a volume of 76 m3 and weighing about 8 tons is to depart to the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Donors ranging from private individuals to groups of friends, as well as organisations and companies wanted to provide concrete help to the Ukrainians as Christmas approaches. A total of 122 donors participated.

City of Turku has been recognized by CDP, a global environmental impact non-profit organisation, as one of 123 A List cities across the globe that is taking bold leadership on environmental action and transparency, despite the pressures of a challenging global economic situation.

Turku shares its water expertise on World Water Day on 22 March 2022 in Dubai

World Water Day is be celebrated on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. The event is about the world's dwindling clean water resources, from the consumption of drinking water to the purification of domestic water and the protection of water. In December 2021, UNESCO awarded Turku for the cleanest drinking water in the world. At the Dubai Expo 2020, Turku Region Water Ltd. CEO Aki Artimo will speak about another innovation in the Turku region: the production of artificial groundwater in Virttaankangas.

European Mayors appeal to their governments to save human lives and to secure the receiving of refugees

Mayors of Europe have issued a joint appeal to their governments to save human lives and to secure the receiving of Ukrainian refugees. One hundred European Mayors decided on the appeal in their online meeting on 14 March. In addition to Mayor of Turku Minna Arve, other Finnish cities taking part in the appeal are Espoo, Pori, Tampere and Vantaa.

Finland’s largest cities support Ukraine with humanitarian aid

The Finnish cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Vantaa, Hämeenlinna, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Kotka, Kouvola, Kuopio, Lahti, Lappeenranta, Mikkeli, Porvoo and Rovaniemi are preparing to provide assistance to Ukraine. In some of the cities, decisions have been taken today, 28 February 2022, and in others, the necessary decisions are to be taken when the elected bodies next meet. The cities will assist the country of Ukraine and its residents with a sum totalling approximately EUR 1.5 million. Turku will participate with EUR 150 000.
