Due to the illegal strike of the Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors JHL which started with a short notice period on Wednesday, the 6th of November, the City of Turku will not able to offer warm meals in the day care centres, comprehensive schools, upper secondary schools and in some of the vocational institutes in the end of the week. Schools and day care centres ask parents to provide packed lunch for their children. The strike will also affect several other activities of the city.

The City of Turku has informed the parents of the children with Wilma messages on the effects of the strike.

The day care centres and the schools of the City of Turku will have food available for three days. The City of Turku wants to remind the parents that it is preferred to provide packed lunch for the children. It should be possible to store the food at the room temperature as refrigerated storage space will not be available. Neither will it be possible to heat the meals.

The City of Turku will act in a way that the strike would have as minor effects as possible for the children and the youth.

– The City of Turku has been unaware of the timing of the strike and about its possible restrictions. Consequently, it has been difficult for the day care centres and the schools of the City of Turku to get prepared for the strike and to organize school meals with so short notice period, states Director of the Education Division Timo Jalonen.

Almost 20,000 children and young people will be affected by the strike in almost 150 units of the City of Turku.

The strike affects essentially also the cleaning services, maintenance services and the facility management services of Arkea. The cleaning services will continue according to the service agreement after the strike. The maintenance services will be taken care of right after the termination of the strike.

The City of Turku will inform the Turku residents regularly through the media, on the website and through Wilma
