The temporary food aid by the City of Turku and Operaatio Ruokakassi for the economically disadvantaged was opened for the duration of the coronavirus epidemic, as many food aid services in Turku were closed due to circumstances. Food aid bags were delivered by employees from City of Turku divisions where operations had been halted due to the coronavirus situation.

As the coronavirus epidemic is easing up and restrictions are easing as well, the City of Turku staff are returning to their own work. Also services maintained by organisations closed during restrictions are gradually restarting. For this reason, the food aid service set up for the duration of the strictest restrictions ends on 22 May 2020.

During the state of emergency caused by coronavirus, over 4200 food aid bags were delivered on the doorstep of economically disadvantaged residents. Food aid has been ordered online or by phone. The demand for food aid bags has varied but the need has been somewhat constant.

Organisations continue to offer food aid as before, taking into account safety distances and gathering restrictions. In addition to organisations, food aid is also offered e.g. through the social work of the Turku and Kaarina Parish Union.
