Approximately 70 international exchange students with coronavirus have been ordered or will be ordered into isolation and a few hundred students exposed to coronavirus have been ordered or will be ordered into quarantine by decision of Chief Physician for Infectious Diseases.

The extent of the infection cluster among exchange students was discovered in Turku on Wednesday 17 March. The current number of infections is likely to rise, as City of Turku communicable disease authorities are still investigating chains of infection. The exact number of students exposed to coronavirus is not yet known.

– The situation of infections is very difficult. Exchange students have been actively on the move, they have lots of contacts between each other and they live in shared apartments, says Chief Physician for Infectious Diseases Jutta Peltoniemi.

In the morning of Friday 19 March, the City of Turku gave Southwestern Finland Police Department a request of assistance for monitoring that quarantine and isolation orders are complied with.

Information about concrete measures related to monitoring will follow later.

Instructions for the duration of epidemic delivered to student housing

Students involved in the cluster include students from the University of Turku and Turku University of Applied Sciences living in shared apartments in the Student Village, Varissuo and Luolavuori.

Students have been given instructions for the duration of the epidemic.

– Isolation and quarantine are orders based on the Infectious Diseases Act and they must be complied with, Peltoniemi states.

City of Turku to deliver food aid for students

Students have received information e.g. on what quarantine and isolation mean and what they must do if they have caught coronavirus.

The City of Turku will arrange food aid and hygiene products for the duration of quarantine. The food aid consists of a bag of basic groceries. The first food aid bags will be delivered at the doorstep of students today. The next grocery bags will be delivered early next week.
