There are many exercise opportunities for children and teenagers in Turku.
- The Sports Wonderlands for Kids are meant for families with children. Children aged 1–12 can visit the Wonderlands in the company of an adult. The Wonderlands are free of charge.
- The ‘Mihi’ classes offer 13–19-year-olds opportunities for exercising. These classes are also free of charge.
- Sports clubs offer many sports activities for children and teenagers at reasonable prices.
On schooldays the student gets a warm meal between 10.00 and 12.00. The meal covers approximately one third of a person’s daily food requirements.
Kaarea Oy sells snacks in secondary schools and in upper secondary schools when it is allowed. List of schools and information about snacks and payment options are available in Finnish.
A student will be offered a special diet if the reason is medical, religious or ethical.
The Swedish Language Section of Education Committee is responsible for Swedish language services. The Swedish language services are directed by Liliane Kjellman.
VALMO is meant for students whose native languages are not Finnish or Swedish and prepares them for basic education. The students learn Finnish and other skills for approximately a year before transferring to local schools.
Students whose native languages are not Finnish or Swedish can choose between Finnish as a Second Language and Literature or Swedish as Second Language and Literature (S2).
OMO is education given in students’ native languages.
Parents always have the responsibility to teach their child to move safely in traffic. The way to school should be acquainted together with the child well beforehand.
School transportation is primarily provided with the City's public transportation bus card. The card can be loaded at the Public Transportation Service Office, Aurakatu 5.
The third element of the City of Turku’s sports grant system reform is the new support for competence and development targeted at sports clubs, which aims to ensure high-quality coaching in all sports clubs and associations in Turku.
The City of Turku is reforming grants related to sports and the pricing of the use of sports facilities. The reforms will be introduced in 2025. The aim is to promote the well-being of children and young people through physical activities, to support hobbyists of different sports more equally than at present and to control the increase in the costs of hobbies.
From 2025 onwards, Turku is the first in Finland to introduce a sports grant for children and young people: Each year, the City of Turku gives all Turku residents aged 7–19 years a voucher for the fees of regular, guided sports hobby activities organised by sports clubs and associations in Turku!
The aim of the Turku model for leisure activities is to enable every child and young person attending comprehensive school in Turku to have a free, meaningful hobby in connection with the school day. The Turku model for leisure activities is part of The Finnish model for leisure activities of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Hobbies for the academic year 2023–2024
In autumn 2023, Turku launched more than 120 free hobby groups. The hobbies have been selected based on surveys conducted for children and young people.
Free hobbies and clubs in Turku comprehensive schools and their neighbouring areas have been put together in school-specific hobby schedules.
School clubs are mainly intended for pupils of the school in question and are free of charge, unless otherwise stated. Changes are possible. Most of the schedules are only available in Finnish and Swedish.
A pupil can be assigned a special diet on the basis of food allergy or hypersensitivity and for religious or other ethical reasons. The need for a special diet is assessed in school health care. The special diet should be followed on a regular basis.
If the pupil needs a special diet for health reasons, the guardians should contact the school nurse annually (Have a look at Notification form for special dietary needs in English).
Café Navigare is an inviting summer café on the back deck of the ship, with a view to the riverside landscape of the Aura River.
The café serves fresh pastries, savoury snacks and refreshing beverages.
Navigare’s deck areas on both sides of the ship are used as a café terrace. They are also licenced areas for serving alcoholic drinks.

The ship has several elegant and traditional premises for holding various celebrations, meetings and banquets. Most of the restaurants are open only by prior arrangement.

Students who have difficulties in learning or school attendance have the right to get part-time remedial teaching alongside other teaching. Part-time remedial teaching is given to students who have, for example:
Students who have temporarily fallen behind in their studies or otherwise need short-term support in their learning have the right to get remedial teaching. Remedial teaching should be started immediately when the difficulties in learning or school attendance have been noticed, so that the students would not stay behind permanently in their studies. Remedial teaching can counteract difficulties beforehand. Remedial teaching should be organized according to a plan and as often as is necessary.
Characteristic to remedial teaching are individually planned
Parents have the primary responsibility for the upbringing of the child. The school is responsible for the student’s teaching and upbringing as a member of the school community. The task of the school is to provide the parents or guardians with information so that they can follow and advance their child’s school attendance and learning. Co-operation between school and home is essential for the school work to succeed.
Flexible teaching arrangements means methods of working and doing that take into account the students’ individual learning and developmental needs. The primary aim is to support the students with their studying in their own learning environments in such a way that the objectives of the curriculum are met.
Organizing flexible teaching arrangements calls for:
- time reserved for collaborative planning
- applicability of the timetable
- commitment to the arrangements by the school teachers and management
Practices:
Differentiation is based on knowledge about the student and is the starting point of all teaching. It applies to:
- extent and depth of studying
- rhythm and progress of studying
- students’ different ways of learning

If your illness has lasted for over three months or is permanent, you have a right to receive medical supplies in accordance with your medical treatment plan free of charge. As a client of Turku health centre you can pre-order the supplies and reclaim them from the Medical Supplies Distribution pickup point after three weeks.
Both the Medical Supplies Distribution pickup point and nurses’ practice are located in the area of the Mäntymäki hospital. Book an appointment for a nurse if you need guidance in the use of medical supplies.
In the national core curriculum the schools and education institutions are encouraged to co-operate actively with companies and communities as a part of schoolwork and studying. The aim is to use multiform learning environments to increase know-how.
The management of the schools and education institutions as well as the teaching and education personnel need to be aware of the statutes concerning marketing and sponsorship when they are representing their school or education institution in corporate or community co-operation.
Special support is given to students whose growth, development or learning goals would otherwise not be fully met. The task of special support is to give the student comprehensive and systematic support so that the student can finish their compulsory education and get a foundation for postgraduate studies after comprehensive school. The student’s self-esteem, study motivation, and the possibilities to experience success and the joy of learning are strengthened. The student’s participation in and responsibility of studying is being supported.
