Gateway to the west for passenger traffic
Turku harbour, or the Port of Turku, has good ship connections to the west. Viking Line and Tallink Silja have daily morning and evening departures from Turku and Stockholm. The ships stop by Åland on the way and stay only for a little more than an hour at the harbours where they turn.
Turku is located between land and sea, on the coast of the Baltic Sea, so its nature is diverse and beautiful. Turku has many different kinds of nature trails and conservation areas, and the presence of the Archipelago Sea brings thousands of small islands and islets – the life at sea – close.
However, the beauty of the nature should not be taken for granted. In order to preserve the diversity of nature also for the following generations, we all should mend our ways.
The many problems of the Baltic Sea, worst of all the eutrophication, impact the habitat types of marine environments. Habitat types are areas of land or water with certain environmental conditions and plant and animal species. Their well-being is the prerequisite for using the sea for recreation and economic purposes.
Half of the underwater habitat types of the Baltic Sea are either endangered or extremely endangered. The most endangered habitat types are close to us in the Archipelago Sea and the Gulf of Finland where the human impact on the marine habitats is the greatest.
The monitoring of air quality in Turku city area is organised in co-operation with the neighbouring cities and the industrial and power production plants. The Environmental Protection Office of Turku is responsible for the carrying out of the monitoring. The measuring network consists of eight fixed and one mobile measuring points.
Parking halls are not owned by the city so each parking hall has its own pricing. Listed below are some of the largest parking halls in Turku. Clicking the name of the hall will take you to its home page, and clicking the address will show you the location on the guide map.

The City Council sets objectives for planning in the housing and land use programme and in the master plan. The planning unit of Urban Planning prepares the plans based on these objectives.
The city plan (local detailed plan) dictates the following, among other things:
