Turku University of Applied Sciences offers possibilities for University of Applied Sciences education, updating of know-how in the Open University of Applied Sciences, or having a new position through continuing education. The area of influence of the University of Applied Sciences covers Southwest Finland. A majority of the students come from Southwest Finland, and also a majority of the graduated are employed in the region.
There are two kinds of higher education institutions in Finland - universities and universities of applied sciences (UAS). The mission of universities is to conduct scientific research and provide instruction and postgraduate education based on it. UAS train professionals in response to labour market needs and conduct research and development which supports instruction and promotes regional development in particular.

The University of Turku has always had an active role in the research and cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region. The University of Turku is a founding member of the Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRUN) as well as of the Centrum Balticum Foundation and Centre located in Turku.
