The responsibility of Building Control is to grant building permits and to monitor the legality of building. Tasks include preventing unauthorized building, monitoring the appropriate condition and cityscape of built environments, and supervising that areas are used according to plans.
Building Control is managed by the Director of Building Control Reima Ojala, who acts as building inspector as stipulated by section 20 of the Land Use and Building Act.
The Building and Permit Committee acts as the building control authority, as stated in the land use and building law, and organises the guidance, councelling and supervision of building in the Turku region. It also acts as the municipal supervising authority as stated in the law of maintenance and public sanitation of streets and some other common use areas.
The committee has 13 members and there is a personal alternate for each of them.
