Turku makes everyone move – Future policies for developing the sports facilities network and the sports culture
In the coming years, the City of Turku's sports facility network will have significant update needs, as several central and popular sports facilities reach the end of their life cycle.
Ruissalo
For a long time, Ruissalo was used for pasture. People began cutting down groves in the 1540s to cultivate fields. Around the same time, Ruissalo came under the rule of Turku Castle, and its crops were used for the castle’s needs. In the 1550s Ruissalo became the hunting grounds for the Duke of Finland.

The work Kimono by Karin Widnäs (b. 1946) was revealed on the opening day of the Turku Capital of Culture year on 15 January 2011. The work is formed of special bricks shaped like Japanese kimonos, built in a wastewater treatment station pipe. The mould of the bricks has been prepared on the basis of the artist’s plaster mould at the ceramics factory of IDO.
The sculpture Daisy by Jani Rättyä (b.1973) and Antti Stöckel (b.1973), situated on the grass area between the ship Suomen Joutsen (Swan of Finland) and Forum Marinum, is a temporary work of Turku’s outdoor collection with an estimated lifespan of 3 to 5 years. The stem of the plant consists of 12 wooden parts, the petals have been made of fibreglass strengthened with steel and the yellow centre of the flower is made of wood.
The main sports using the Kupittaa ball game hall are futsal, basketball, volleyball, floorball, badminton and gymnastics. Adult teams and the oldest junior teams playing in the highest series of the aforesaid sports will train and compete in the hall.
Turku has a comprehensive network of sand and stone dust fields. Most of the fields can be reserved via the Timmi reservation planner. Part of the fields are in free use and cannot be reserved.
Sand fields in free use are free of charge for everyone and they cannot be reserved. Night time silence is at 22-07.
The sand fields in free use are mainly small fields or lähikenttä (max. 40x60)
aside from 10 small fields for small-sided games (min. 40x60). The fields are covered with either sand or stone dust.
Turku is full of street art. You will find examples of artwork on the map (in Finnish).
