Research Reports series of Turku City Urban Research publishes full-length research reports on timely topics of urban research and urban development. The experts writing in the series mainly do not work in the organizations of Turku City and their assertions may not necessarily meet the official views of the city.

The Provincial Archives of Turku
The Provincial Archives keeps the over 40-year-old and permanently kept documents of state government officials operating or having operated in the former Turku and Pori Province, the current Regional Council of Satakunta, and the Regional Council of Southwest Finland.
Documents related mainly to land use, as well as to the maintenance and construction contracting of public areas and city-owned buildings, are kept in the archives of the Public Utility Property Management. The archive has materials from the past 300 years. The central portion of the materials comprises the following:
InfoFinland.fi is a multilingual online information service that offers users a comprehensive information package about Finland. The service is intended for all immigrants and those planning to move to Finland who do not know Finnish.

The City of Turku has an extensive network of thirteen twin cities in Europe. Twin city relationships offer great possibilities for co-operation within various fields. Additionally, twin city activities enable the comparing of good practices and operations models, as well as the promoting of the internationalization of NGOs and education institutions.
Turku Days will be organized in Saint Petersburg 20–22 October 2015. Business co-operation will be on display in a big way this year. The Turku Region Development Centre will organize a business-to-business event offering company visits, a networking buffet and theme groups from various fields for the registered companies. The event is organized in co-operation with the Finnish-Russian Chamber of Commerce and their Finnish Business in St.
Project activities are an excellent way to develop operations and find solutions to various development challenges. The City of Turku Education Division and its subdivisions are continuously carrying out a great number of projects.
Project portfolios
The projects of the City of Turku Education Division are divided into six project portfolios. The objective of the project activities is to support the strategic development of the division and improve the management and leadership of the project entities.
The administration of the Environmental Division supports its subdivisions in implementing their tasks, and is responsible for the preparation of the decision-making of the Urban Planning and Environmental Committee, for the communications of the division, for the preparation of exceptional permits, for organizing filing, and for personnel management.
The administration of the Environmental Division is headed by Harri Lehtinen.
The task of the Environmental Health Care is to prevent health hazards caused by the environment. Environmental Health Care is responsible for the supervision, counselling, and inspection tasks in the Turku City region required by the health care, food, product safety, and tobacco laws.
Environmental Health care is also responsible for organizing veterinary emergency services and animal disease control together with the neighbouring municipalities.
Environmental Health Care is managed by Environmental Health Chief Olli Sjövall.
Environmental Protection is responsible for the official environmental protection tasks that belong to the municipality, and looks after conservation and matters related to fishing and hunting in the land and water areas owned by the City of Turku.
Environmental Protection is also responsible for the preparation of the decision-making of the South West Finland Waste Management Committee.
Environmental Protection is managed by acting Environmental Protection Director Olli-Pekka Mäki.
The service area of public transport organises public transport services open to all in the Föli municipalities of Turku city region. Regional public transport serves six municipalities; Turku, Kaarina, Raisio, Naantali, Lieto and Rusko. Regional public transport is responsible for preparing and implementing affairs related to the area of Turku Region Public Transport Committee in conformity with its orders.
The service area is managed by a public transport director.
Call has been opened for the City of Turku’s grants for writing Master’s Thesis in urban research. Call applies for students registered to and actively studying for a degree at University of Turku or Åbo Akademi University. The grant is applied in autumn with a research plan, when the work is ongoing. The grant will be paid next year only against a ready-made Master’s Thesis. Maximum 10 grants will be allocated altogether in the competition funded by the City of Turku.
A call is open for research projects matching the Turku Urban Research Programme. The research funding is provided by the City of Turku, the West-Finland Housing Association of Public Utility, the University of Turku, and Åbo Akademi University. The call applies to interdisciplinary research groups, led by and including researchers affiliated with the University of Turku (UTU) and Åbo Akademi University (ÅA). The consortiums can involve also researchers from other universities and research institutes.
The Turku Vocational Institute successfully qualifies thousands of young people in various professions every year. Individual educational paths are ensured through personal study plans. Students may choose between the expert path, international path or supported learning path.
We also offer excellent training options for upper secondary school graduates. The double-certificate path, the athlete path and entrepreneurial education support the students’ needs and development.
Students in upper secondary schools in Turku achieve top marks in the national matriculation examinations year after year – thanks to a high standard of teaching and motivated students. The Swedish-speaking upper secondary school in Turku, Katedralskolan i Åbo, is the oldest upper secondary school in Finland, whose past principals include the father of literary Finnish, Mikael Agricola.
Basic education refers to liberal arts education that lasts nine years, with some exceptions. Basic education is free-of-charge and its goal is to provide everyone with the same qualifications for further educa-tion. Basic education aims at supporting pupils’ growth and offering them knowledge and skills needed for life.
Geographical Information and Data Systems is responsible for the management of the data systems used by the Public Utility Property Management, geographical information systems, and map production, as well as for guide and theme maps.
Geographical Information and Data Systems is managed by City Geodesist Ilkka Saarimäki.
Real Property Development is responsible for the development, transfers, and land use agreements of city-owned properties, as well as land acquisition and property management. Real Property Development is also responsible for the official tasks that belong to the municipality as per the housing legislation, and for the management of land use projects.
Real Property Development is managed by Director Petri Liski.
Property Formation and Field Surveying is responsible for site layout plans, land division proceedings, field surveying, and land register, as well as locating and marking the building site. Additionally, the customer service of the Public Utility Property Management is also a responsibility of Property Formation and Field Surveying.
Property Formation and Field Surveying is managed by Property Formation Director Laura Suurjärvi.
Infrastructure Services is responsible for the management, maintenance and building of streets, parks and other public areas. Also, Infrastructure Services takes care of tasks belonging to street maintenance, municipal parking control, vehicle tows, area surveillance, and property management.
Director of Infrastructure Services is Tapio Siirto.
According to the Local Government Act (section 77) and the Waste Act (646/2011), the Southwest Finland Waste Management Committee acts as part of the Turku City organization as the regional waste management official in the following municipalities:
