The lighting of the Theatre Bridge is an essential part of Christmas in Turku. The bridge was first illuminated in 2016 and since then, it has been a beloved part of seasonal lighting. Turku City Theatre is responsible for creating the lighting for the bridge, and its theme is always related to a topical play in the theatre’s programme. This year the inspiration stems from Hiljaiset sillat (The Bridges of Madison County).
Works by Turku-based cartoon artists are projected above the entrance of the Main Library. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Turku’s year as the European Capital of Culture, the works are thematically related to different art forms.
Artists and works
The Light Mural has been implemented in cooperation with the Turku Comics Club.
The Market Hall Alley has been adorned with special Christmas lighting for many years already, but for the first time in 2020, a larger-scale light installation was created in the alley as part of the Path of Light event. The goal is to make the alley into a more attractive and atmospheric passage way between the beautifully lit river front and the blocks in the city centre.
Throughout December, you can also find a daily changing story window called Moles’ December in the Market Hall Alley.
The Path of Light is a light art spectacle arranged by the City of Turku. It consists of a great light event and seasonal lighting on display throughout the darkest winter season. The inspiration for the Path of Light was drawn from Turku itself, its stories, atmosphere and the surrounding landscapes.

Climate neutral cities by 2050
The purpose of the RESPONSE-project is to create sustainable and safe cities while simultaneously improving the quality of life and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

The City of Turku has two main communication and marketing channels: the communication channels of the City of Turku and Visit Turku, the city's tourist office. The City of Turku's communications are mainly aimed at Turku residents and those living in the Turku region, and Visit Turku's communications are aimed at domestic and international visitors arriving in the city.
Effective traffic arrangements contribute to a smooth execution of an event. It is therefore a good idea to invest in its planning and implementation. When planning the logistics around an event, it is important to pay attention to venue access and traffic diversion.
Temporary Traffic Arrangements
Temporary traffic arrangements are needed if traffic has to be restricted. All temporary traffic arrangements must be reported to the Turku Urban Transport Center by submitting a notification on temporary traffic arrangements.
Well-implemented security arrangements contribute to the smooth and uninterrupted operation of an event. The organiser is responsible for the safety of the event.
Event security is covered by many laws and recommendations. When assessing the risks, the target audience of the event, the number of participants, the time, the location and other event specific factors, such as the use of special effects, must be taken into account.
When organising an event, you usually need many kinds of structures and furniture. The City of Turku has a selection of furniture suitable for event usage that event organisers can rent out. In addition, there are many independent actors in the Turku area that for example rent stage structures and audio equipment.
Waste Management at Public Events
According to waste management regulations in the Turku Metropolitan area, public events must be organized in a way that minimizes the amount of waste as much as possible. The organizer of a public event is responsible for planning and coordinating suitable waste management measures, such as keeping the event area clean, sorting and recycling waste. The organizer is also responsible for communicating said measures to all event participants during the event. Anyone responsible for calling together the event is considered an organizer.
The objective of combating noise is to provide a healthy and enjoyable environment in which noise provides as little inconvenience as possible. According to article 118 of the Environmental Protection Act of 2014, a local environmental protection official must be notified if an event causes noise that, although temporarily, impacts living and working in surrounding areas negatively. A notification must also be filed in cases where sound amplifiers are used outside during nighttime (between 10PM to 7AM).
No notification is needed for playing acoustic music in the streets.
All outdoor events require a permit from the landowner or, if the venue is on city property rented from the city, from the tenant.
Parks, streets, and marketplaces
If the event takes place in a public venue owned by the city, such as a park, a permit application should be submitted to the agency in charge of urban environment. It is recommended to apply for the permits as early as possible since the handling period of the applications if approximately 4 weeks.
You can submit an application
There are many venues and locations in Turku to suit the needs of different events. Turku hosts a wide range of events yearly, including for example big festivals and markets. The City's large-scale hotel capacity and vast supply of venues is a great start to host events with thousands of guests.
In event management, accessibility refers to the idea that everyone should be provided an equal opportunity to participate in, work and perform at an event. Among other things, accessibility can be understood in terms of how you see, hear, understand and move.
The Environment
By taking into consideration the environment and sustainability issues while organising an event, you can spare nature and save some money in your event budget. Organising events with sustainability in mind shows the event organiser's responsibility.
Sustainable development in Turku
The City of Turku is committed to the Turku 2029- city strategy, where the principles of sustainable development are considered in every activity.
There are many things to consider when organising an event. One aspect is applying for permits and notifications for a number of different purposes. The number of permits needed to organise an event depends on its size and nature. Typically, a land use permit and a notification to the police will do for smaller events, while larger events may require temporary diversion of traffic, a notificaition of noise and a food sales licence.
