Turku’s top spots among students

The Riverside

Many things in Turku are connected to the River Aura! The riverside is packed full of cafés, restaurants and happy people, but it also offers secret picnic spots, tranquil nature and cycling opportunities. The riverside is also home to Föri, numerous riverboats and the jogging paths found upstream, as well as places to practise kayaking or stand up paddling. The riverside is a lovely place to study for an exam or to meet with friends. The riverside is the heart of Turku. As one student put it: “When you are cycling along the riverside, you remember why it is so great to be a student here in Turku.”

Parks

Samppalinna Hill, Sports Park, Kupittaa Park, Vartiovuori Park, Puolala Park and many others. Turku’s parks are among the students’ absolute favourite places. The parks have ample space for all sorts of activities, ranging from outdoor yoga to skating and from disc golf to swimming. The parks also play their own special role in the annual student events, such as May Day, freshman initiation and Shrove Tuesday tobogganing.

Student Village

Turku’s Student Village is the home village of many students, located near the city centre and the campuses. A study on Instagram photos revealed that the most commonly used hashtag in the Student Village is #happy.

Ruissalo

The island of Ruissalo is a favourite place among students and other residents of Turku, and for a good reason. Ruissalo’s attractions include sandy beaches, seaside cliffs, Ruisrock, the ornamented 19th century villas and the botanical garden. You can ride Föli to Saaronniemi for a BBQ and a swim, or take a bike trip to the quiet Kuuvannokka.

Libraries

Turku has several libraries available for students. Each one has its own atmosphere, and some of the reading rooms are open 24/7. Spending a night at the library studying for an exam is part of many students’ memories from Turku. The Turku City Library is a living room that the citizens can be proud of. You can also do 3D printing there or rent a bike with your library card.
