Business Life

The Turku region and Southwest Finland will require thousands of new employees by 2020 for the manufacturing technology industry and its growth phase that will also impact other sectors.

Work is now done at the shipyard with enthusiasm and in a good spirit. As our order book is filled with one impressive ship after another, as shipbuilders we have interesting years ahead of us.

The ultimate competitive factor is skilled labour

– The ultimate competitive factor is skilled labour. New ship orders, production agreements in car manufacturing and other major business deals were ultimately obtained here in Southwest Finland with world-class top expertise, says Pekka Sundman, Director of the City Development Group of Turku.

At present, growth in the Turku region is being boosted by the excellent success of the business sector: the strong growth prospects of the maritime, pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries in particular are increasing trust and fuelling a boom in other industries, particularly construction.

Spearhead industries include:

  • maritime industry
  • construction
  • bio-industries
  • logistics
  • tourism
  • creative industries

Large employers in the area include e.g. the City of Turku, the hospital district of Southwest Finland, the universities, Meyer Turku, Posti, Orion, Bayer, If Vahinkovakuutusyhtiö and Turun Seudun Kiinteistöpalvelu.

Maritime industry flourishes by the sea

A shipyard requires talent from a number of fields. Meyer Turku builds the most state-of-the art, luxurious cruisers to sail the world’s seas. Under the ownership of the German Meyer family, the future of the shipyard is guaranteed and reliable. More competent workers from welders to ship plate makers and from designers to IT experts and project management experts are needed forthe strong development of the operations.

Building healthcare and growth in exports

Innovation company invests in expertise. Bayer employs around 650 professionals in Turku, from skilled workers to doctors. The unit at Pansio produces hormonal coils, among other products. This Finnish invention is exported to over 100 countries annually at a value of EUR 1 billion. Known for its innovation, Bayer is a major employer in the Turku region and offers its personnel the opportunity for continuous professional development.
