The åppi application, developed in Turku, is a free augmented reality (AR) mobile app available for download from app stores. The application is available in Finnish, Swedish, and English.
“An amazing app for tourists, locals, adults, and young people. Hidden history and wonderful stories!”
Augmented reality åppi locations created by upper secondary school and university students from Turku can be found along the Aura River waterfront, in Ruissalo, at Vanhalinna in Lieto, and on the island of Seili.
Content for the platform is produced by students under the guidance of their teachers. The technical implementation of the application is provided by the Turku-based company CTRL Reality Oy.
Catherine Månsdotter, a 3D hermit beetle, and much more
Along the Aura River, users can explore the history of sites such as the cholera cemetery and Sokeriranta, as well as learn about notable figures from Turku, including Paavo Nurmi and Valpuri Innamaa. Behind Turku Cathedral, you can encounter Catherine Månsdotter, brought to life using technology that allows video content to be viewed on a mobile device within the real-world environment.
In Ruissalo, you can find, for example, a 3D hermit beetle as well as sea creatures and dinosaurs created by students, located along the time trail at the Ruissalo Botanical Garden.
At Vanhalinna in Lieto, locations include the Aittamäki brooch, the weapons of Vanhalinna and the Vanhalinna hillfort. On the island of Seili, six augmented reality åppi locations form a nature trail across the island.
Thanks to continuous content production, new material and ideas for further development will continue to be added to the AR platform in the future.
The development of the application content will continue as a collaboration between upper secondary schools in Turku.
Versatile teaching materials
As part of the development of the åppi application, a set of teaching materials has also been created for teachers, offering ready-made lesson modules for different subjects.
The materials cover biology, geography, history, Finnish language and literature, Swedish, and visual arts.
Each lesson module lasts approximately 75 minutes. The materials are primarily intended for upper secondary school students but can also be used in basic education.
