Studying in upper secondary school
The upper secondary school provides a solid general knowledge base and a good foundation for higher education studies. In addition to the matriculation examination, you can complete general upper secondary school diplomas in practical and art subjects.
Turku has five Finnish-language upper secondary schools with daytime teaching, the Swedish-language Katedralskolan i Åbo, the English-language Turku International School, and the Evening High School.
In addition to the city’s general upper secondary schools, general upper secondary education is also provided by the Turku Teacher Training School and the Steiner School. You can study in an English-speaking upper secondary school on the IB track in Turku Teacher Training School or in Turku International School. Evening High School allows you to combine flexible studies with different life situations.
Discretionary addmission
In order to be admitted to general upper secondary school through discretionary admission, you must have sufficient prerequisites to complete general upper secondary school studies.
You can only be admitted to general upper secondary school through discretionary selection:
- If you have discontinued basic education
- You have completed your education abroad, or
- You have an individualised syllabus in both mother tongue and mathematics in basic education, and the assessment has been carried out before 1.8.2025.
Submit to the educational institution the certificates of your completed studies translated into Finnish/Swedish/English by the end of the joint application process at the latest. The translation must be official, i.e. authorised.
Before making a selection decision, the education provider must assess that you have sufficient prerequisites to complete your studies in the language of instruction of the educational institution. If necessary, the educational institution will invite you to an interview and/or language test.
The language test will be held on Monday 13.4.2026 at 11.00—14.00. The reserve day is Monday 20 April from 11:00 to 14:00 if the applicant is unable to participate in the test on the first day for a compelling reason.
