Swedish basic education in Turku
Your child receives free basic education in Swedish at City owned schools. Turku also has other Finnish language schools.
The City’s Swedish language schools have one shared student admission area. The guardians can enrol their child to the Swedish language school they want.
Comprehensive school starts the year your child turns seven. Situations where there is an official decision to start school earlier or later are exceptions.

Basic education is for students aged 7 to 16 in grades 1–9.

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available in the first grade, the selection criteria will be applied in the following order:
- Health reasons and needs
- School’s Accessibility: The evaluation is made with Föli’s journey planner, looking at safe walking routes first and safe public transport routes second.
- Siblings in the school
- Drawing lots
