What is basic education in the arts?
Basic education in the arts gives students the skills to express themselves and to apply for vocational and higher education in the arts.
The syllabi for basic education in the arts consist of a general syllabus and an extended syllabus.

Curriculum
The provider of basic education in the arts must have either their curriculum approved by the municipality or a permit from the Ministry of Education and Culture.
In Turku, the Cultural Committee approves the curricula for the general syllabus.
The educational institution can have its curriculum (general syllabus) approved in the artistic fields for which the Finnish National Agency for Education has defined a national core curriculum:
- music
- literary art
- dance
- performing arts (circus art and theatre arts)
- visual arts (architecture, audiovisual art, fine art and crafts)
