The Urban Park in Turku
Turku National Urban Park, established in 2013, is a defined area covering the city’s most central locations from the shores of Airisto, through Ruissalo and Saaronniemi, all the way to Kylämäki Village. The park follows the Aura River and is approximately 15 kilometres in length.
Map of the National Urban Park and its boundaries
Turku National Urban Park was established on World Environment Day, 5 June 2013.
The park forms the most valuable core area of Turku’s green and recreational network, extending approximately 15 kilometres from Airisto to Kuralan Kylämäki. It is based on Turku’s historical role as Finland’s oldest city, a Baltic Sea city, and a centre of administration, religion, science, trade, and industry.
National urban parks are established jointly by the Ministry of the Environment and the City. The Ministry has defined four strict criteria for national urban parks, relating to content, extent and integrity, ecological sustainability, and continuity, as well as urban character.
The park is managed in a way that preserves these criteria. Its values are taken into account in land use planning and development within the area.
