Forms of multilingual education
If your child's first language is not Finnish or Swedish, or they have an otherwise multilingual background, you can choose Finnish as a second language and literature or Swedish as a second language and literature (S2).
Education given in students’ native language means support for studying school subjects in the student’s first language. The OMO- teacher plans, puts the plans into action, and evaluates the teaching with the class or subject teacher.
Linguistically supported teaching helps students who need support in the language they are studying in and other studying skills.
Native language education is for students whose mother tongue is not Finnish or Swedish. Also, students who have learnt the language abroad can participate in the teaching. The education strengthens language skills and the cultural identity.
The teaching is available in almost 30 different languages. The lessons are usually after school day in specifically selected schools.
Romani and Sami languages can be studied by students who speak Romani or Sami as their native language or if Romani or Sami is one of the languages their family speaks. The teaching of Sami languages is held online.
At Turku International School you can receive basic and upper secondary school education in English. Turun normaalikoulu together with the City of Turku and the University of Turku are responsible for the teaching at Turku International School. The school’s language of teaching is English.
Preparatory education for basic education is for multilingual students aged 7-16 who have just moved to Finland and prepares them for the transition to basic education. Students will learn Finnish and other skills needed at school. The course takes about a year, after which the student moves to their local school.
VALMO education in Turku is only for children living in Turku. The guardians of children under 7 can contact early childhood education service guidance. For over 16-year-olds there is basic education for adults at Turku Vocational Institute.
