More vitality

The effective work done by Turku for the climate, nature and circular economy makes the city an attractive location for companies. On the flip side, the city’s environmental work is boosted by companies’ efforts to promote the green transition.

Turku has already seen how climate action and nature work supports businesses in the region and attracts investments. This creates a positive feedback loop where new jobs and increasing vitality enable a good everyday life.

Corporate climate action

There is a large number of companies, communities and organisations in Turku taking climate action and promoting the green transition. Turku invites these actors to join its Climate Team of already more than 130 members.  

Examples of actions by the Climate Team:

  • Utilising industrial side streams.
    Safeguarding nature reserves.
    Climate-friendly food at day-care centres and schools.

Mission: carbon neutral Turku

The Climate Plan and the annual  Climate report (pdf) also serve as a roadmap and compass for a carbon neutral Turku in companies’ climate work.     

The perspective of business and industry on environmental and nature work is also taken into account in the Mayor’s Programme and the Turku City Strategy. Turku knows that progressive environmental work promotes sustainable economic growth.

Turku is involved in the EU’s 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission, which is also reflected in companies’ climate work. The cities involved in the Mission have committed to be carbon neutral by 2030, while inspiring all of Europe to match that effort.

Companies also play an important role in the Mission. Turku has invited companies in the region to sign their own climate commitments.

The undersigned undertake to: 

  • strive towards the Carbon Neutral Turku 2029 goal
  • make emission reductions
  • communicate about the climate actions of their organisation
  • serve as examples of climate work
  • participate in the activities of the Climate Team.

Reaching goals through cooperation

The aim is to get an even larger group to work towards a carbon neutral Turku. More climate commitments are also planned for the coming years.
