What are Cultural intermediate spaces?
Cultural intermediate spaces support artists’ working conditions and make use of temporarily empty buildings in Turku. The scheme also creates new and surprising urban culture.
The scheme offers spaces for cultural activities on a temporary basis. These may be buildings scheduled for demolition, repurposing, or awaiting a new local detailed plan.
It also allows greater use of spaces in the City of Turku’s own cultural institutions, such as the library and the Museum Centre.
The city selects artists for the intermediate spaces through an application process. We will provide information about the next application round through this page. The goal is to open the next round during December.
What types of activities take place in the intermediate spaces?
The intermediate spaces for culture are meant for artistic work as well as for organising events, workshops, performances and exhibitions.
In return, those selected to use the spaces are expected to offer cultural activities that are open to everyone in Turku.
This way, the model helps create a variety of engaging activities for art and culture enthusiasts, while also supporting the work of artists.
The intermediate space model for culture announces its upcoming activities in Turku’s event calendar.
From pilot to established scheme
The intermediate space model for culture was piloted as a part of the City of Turku’s Cultural Spearhead Project in 2023 and 2024.
Cultural intermediate spaces have been part of the city’s core cultural services since autumn 2024.
