Do you have an idea that could make Turku a little greener, more fun or more sustainable? Now you can turn your idea into reality, as the City of Turku is offering funding for the best ideas!
The application period for the Youth Climate Projects is open from 19 August to 4 October 2026. The City of Turku will distribute approximately €40,000 in total to young people for implementing climate projects. You can apply for €1,000, €2,500 or €4,500 for your project.
Projects will be carried out between 15 November 2026 and 15 April 2027.
Make a climate action your own
You can design a project on almost any topic, as long as it contributes to a more sustainable present or future. This year, special emphasis is placed on:
- more sustainable consumption habits
- responsible use of goods and services
- sustainable mobility
- biodiversity and wellbeing.
Your project could be an event, a series of workshops, an art project, a campaign or something completely new. The most important things are a good idea and a willingness to work together. For example, in 2025, young people created an environmental magazine, art made from waste, environmental education workshops, conferences focusing on sustainability and a cycling parade.
“Young people have shown us beautifully how many ideas they have and how much they want to shape the future of their own city. Young people look at things with fresh eyes and can find new solutions to problems. We want to encourage young people even more strongly to take part in building a sustainable Turku. This is also a great opportunity to learn how to make an impact in society and turn your own ideas into reality,” says Mayor Piia Elo, encouraging young people to seize the opportunity.
Turku aims to become carbon neutral by 2029 and has already reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 75% from 1990 levels, together with businesses, organisations and residents.
You’ll gain useful skills along the way
Running a project is about much more than having a good idea. You’ll gain experience in areas such as project planning, budgeting, collaboration and organising events – skills that are useful both in your studies and in working life.
And you won’t be left on your own. The City of Turku will provide support throughout the planning and implementation of your project.
Who can apply?
Funding can be applied for by 15–24-year-olds who live or study in Turku or the Turku region, youth organisations and clubs operating in the area, or associations that organise activities for young people. Project funding is not available to companies or private individuals.
The project must be led by at least two young people aged 15–24, but the project team can also include younger or older participants.
Applications will be assessed by a multidisciplinary jury. The assessment will consider, among other things, the project’s connection to the focus areas of the call, youth participation, innovativeness, feasibility and impact. The selected projects will be announced at the end of October.
We will organise a project planning session in September, where you can hear from the City’s experts about current climate topics, get tips for planning your project and develop your idea together with other young people and experts.
