Turku condemns Russia's attack on Ukraine, and the Ukrainian cause is still important to Turku. Turku has taken numerous steps for the good of Ukraine and Ukrainians since the war began.

Aid transport to Kharkiv 2024

The associations Feeniksin kilta ry and Ambulansseja Ukrainaan ry, together with the City of Turku, delivered a fire engine to Kharkiv in December 2024.

Aid transport to Kharkiv 2023

Turku City Transport Ltd (Turun Kaupunkiliikenne Oy) donated two used city buses to the municipal enterprise of Turku’s twin city, Kharkiv. The buses were loaded with various types of aid materials collected by Suomen Ukrainalaiset ry, as well as winter training equipment enabling children’s and youth football activities, donated by FC Inter together with its partners.

Ahead of Christmas, the City of Turku organised a collection of electrical and heating equipment to support the City of Kharkiv and its residents. A truckload consisting of 29 euro pallets, with a total volume of 76 m³ and a weight of approximately 8 tonnes, was transported to Kharkiv. The collection involved private individuals, groups of friends, communities and companies, with a total of 122 donors participating.

Turku illuminates the Library Bridge in the colours of the Ukrainian flag on evenings when no other themed lighting is scheduled for the bridge.

Turku and the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv established a twin city relationship by decision of the City Board in August 2022.

Turku has displayed Ukrainian flags continuously, around the clock, along Läntinen Rantakatu since 25 October 2022.

Condemnation of Russia’s actions

The City of Turku immediately terminated all cooperation with Russian partners and condemned Russia’s war of aggression. For example, the twin city cooperation with Saint Petersburg was ended without delay, and the Turku Centre in Saint Petersburg was closed at the same time.
