Gym facilities close to home increased seniors' physical activity levels and motivation
The City of Turku was awarded funding from the Regional Administrative Agency to develop more equal and accessible gym facilities for older people and business cooperation. The business partnership has been running for two years and has been positively received by the City's Sports Services and businesses alike.
The City wants to develop strength training opportunities for older people through various means, as it has been proven to be an effective way to maintain and improve seniors' functional capacity and quality of life. So far, nine different companies and 16 different fitness centres have been involved in the partnership. It has helped to increase the availability of gym facilities in areas where there are no City-owned sports facilities or where there is a high population of older people.
The activity has had a positive impact on the physical activity habits of senior citizens. 80% of participants feel that access to private gyms increases the number of times they exercise each week, 79% report an increase in strength training, and 81% report better motivation to exercise. 94% of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the facilities, equipment and customer service of the private gyms.
During 2026, the possibility of establishing the service as a permanent Senior Wristband service will be assessed, based on factors such as user activity and feedback received. The service aims to promote age-friendliness in private fitness centres.
