Turku Science Park is expanding from Kupittaa towards the former industrial area of Itäharju. Urban planning of the area called Kupittaa Core is currently in progress, with the overall plan for the area being drafted simultaneously.

One important goal for the planning is to enable the region to serve as a development and experimentation platform for new solutions that support low-carbon efforts and the circular economy.

– The Science Park actors co-created the Circular Economy Roadmap for Turku Science Park in 2023. It connects the actors in the area and creates a framework for the circular economy efforts, says Project Director Janne Mustonen.

Plans are in progress for Turku Science Park and Kupittaa Core for the next 100 years. The area competes internationally as a hub that combines research and development with an urban environment.

– We must anticipate the demands of future users to ensure that the area remains competitive in the long term.

The circular economy is considered from the start

Taking circular economy objectives into account is part of Kupittaa Core’s comprehensive responsibility measures.

– In practice, this means material efficiency, adaptability of buildings, use of stormwater, and support for sustainable modes of transport, says Johanna Vuorinen, architect responsible for overall planning.

In addition to key public transport solutions in the area, the plans for Kupittaa Core promote the use of electric vehicles, shared cars and light vehicles. Methods to encourage sustainable transport options in the area include comprehensive charging infrastructure, as well as convenient parking and storage solutions.

Priorities of Turku Science Park’s Circular Economy Roadmap
  • sustainable energy solutions
  • resource-efficient construction for the long term
  • shared means of transport that enable a sustainable lifestyle
  • nature-based solutions for urban ecosystems and water management
