Turku Music Centre Fuuga has been designed to provide smooth and easy-to-use facilities for all visitors. Accessibility solutions have been implemented extensively to support participation and mobility for diverse users throughout the building.
Special attention has been paid to mobility, visual, and hearing needs to ensure that cultural services are accessible to everyone.
Accessibility experts have been involved in the planning from the very beginning. At Fuuga, accessibility is integrated into architecture, interior design, building systems and operations – extending from outdoor areas to performance spaces and staff facilities.
Outdoor Area Accessibility
Fuuga is centrally located in Turku with excellent public transport connections. Drop-off areas are located close to the entrances, and access routes are barrier-free. Outdoor areas are level and well lit. The main entrance is at ground level, clearly visible and equipped with automatic doors and an audio beacon.
Internal Routes and Wayfinding
Indoor routes are logical, clear and sufficiently spacious for accessible movement. All floors are accessible by lift.
Staircases have handrails on both sides and contrasting step markings for safe movement. Wayfinding combines visual and tactile solutions to support orientation.
Sensory Accessibility
Special attention has been given to lighting, contrasts, surface materials and acoustics. Glass surfaces are clearly marked. Lighting is glare-free yet sufficiently effective throughout the year.
Public Areas and Services
All public areas – including foyers, auditoriums, restaurants and service points – are fully accessible. Ticket counters, lifts and public spaces are dimensioned for accessibility and equipped with traditional induction loops.
There are sufficient resting areas, and circulation routes remain clear and safe even during large events.
Accessible toilets for the public are located on the first and second floors, logically positioned along main routes and clearly signposted. Accessible toilets are also available near restaurants and cafés. All facilities are equipped with alarm systems.
Concert and Performance Spaces
Fuuga’s Main Hall and Multi-purpose Hall include a flexible and sufficient number of wheelchair spaces with accessible access and companion seating when needed. In the Main Hall, these spaces are located at both stall and balcony levels.
Performance areas, including the orchestra pit, are accessible. Auditorium staircases and structures support safe and intuitive movement.
The halls are equipped with an Auracast hearing assistance system, operating via Bluetooth transmission, which does not necessarily require a separate receiver.
