A renovation project is starting at Impivaara Swimming Centre, including improvements to the building’s ventilation system and renewal of tiling in the pool areas. The swimming centre will close on 25 May and is currently expected to remain closed until the end of October.

The renovation at Impivaara Swimming Centre will require a longer closure than previously estimated. As planning has progressed, it has become clear that the necessary work will take more time than originally anticipated.

Based on current information, the swimming centre is expected to reopen to customers in week 44. Earlier estimates suggested that the renovation would be completed by the end of August.

The project schedule has been planned with swimmers in mind as much as possible. The work has been concentrated in the summer period, and efforts have been made to keep the closure period as short as possible. Renovation of the changing rooms and washing facilities will not take place until summer 2027. This will help reduce the length of the swimming centre’s closure in 2026.

During the renovation, tiling in the pool areas will be repaired, and the starting blocks of the 50-metre pool as well as other metal structures will be refurbished. In addition, the diving tower platforms and structure will be repaired and improved. Electrical and building service systems will also be upgraded. Final confirmation of the renovation will be made at the end of March.

– It is understandably disappointing for hobbyists, clubs and school swimming lessons that the renovation period has been extended. Due to the renovation, swimming activities for clubs, associations and schools will need to be temporarily relocated elsewhere. However, significant improvements will be made to the facilities, with the aim of increasing comfort and safety. We are in contact with clubs and working closely with them to minimise disruption to their activities, says Markus Kalmari, Director of Sports Services.

Outdoor Swimming Facilities to Have Extended Opening Hours

During the renovation of Impivaara Swimming Centre, the city’s other swimming facilities will continue to serve fitness swimmers, families and clubs. Next summer, the opening hours of outdoor swimming facilities will also be extended to ensure services are available to as many users as possible.

– Samppalinna Outdoor Swimming Pool will open on 13 May and remain open longer than usual, until October. Kupittaa Outdoor Swimming Pool will open in early June and remain open at least until the end of August. Petrelius Swimming Centre will be used by clubs and courses during the summer and will reopen to the general public in September, says Roosa-Mari Neitola, Head of Swimming Facilities.

Despite the extended renovation period, efforts will be made to ensure access to guided swimming groups that support children’s swimming skills. More children’s swimming lessons than last summer will be organised at Samppalinna Outdoor Swimming Pool. Kupittaa Outdoor Swimming Pool will offer swimming school activities organised by swimming clubs. Alternative arrangements for school swimming lessons, open swimming schools and club courses are being explored at the city’s smaller pools. More detailed information will be provided later.

Water Aerobics and Gym Facilities Are Also Available During the Summer

From June to September, water aerobics classes will be available at Kupittaa and Samppalinna Outdoor Swimming Pools.

Although the gym at Impivaara Swimming Centre will be closed due to the renovation, customers can use gyms at Petrelius, Paattinen, Kupittaa Sports Hal,l, and Varissuo Ice Hall. The Impivaara gym facilities will be reopened to the public as soon as the renovation schedule allows. The timetable is still open.

No refunds will be issued for previously purchased sports wristbands due to the renovation of Impivaara Swimming Centre, as other city swimming facilities and sports venues will remain open during the renovation period.
